Italy – Piazza di Siena 2018 – 86th edition

The 2018 edition of the CSIO in Rome is number 86 , but the link between Piazza di Siena , that is the vast area inside Villa Borghese and horse riding, is even more long-standing. The debut of Piazza di Siena as a setting for equestrian competitions dates back to 1922. Find out now all our travels, tours, holidays and horse trekking in Italy. Shortly after, in 1926 the FEI put the Roman Competition on the international agenda and since then the official numbering of the Official International Horse Competition of Rome (CSIO, Concours Saut International Officiel) has begun. After two editions hosted in the Villa Glori Hippodrome and a third in the Parioli one, in 1929 the horse competition returns to Piazza di Siena: four teams competing, France, Poland, Spain and Italy and the triumph of Captain Sandro Bettoni. In the largest and most celebrated public parks in the capital, extraordinary events for Italian horse riding took place, unforgettable challenges between exceptional protagonists. Just think of the d’Inzeo brothers, Graziano Mancinelli and the numerous other standard bearers of this noble sport.

The appointment with the horse competition is interrupted only from 1941 to 1946, during the Second World War. In 1960, however, Piazza di Siena became the stage of the individual test of the Olympic Games in Rome, consequently the CSIO was moved to Turin, furthermore in 1998 the official competition gave way to the World Equestrian Games, which were also held in Rome at the Flaminio Stadium in October. In 2000 the oval of Villa Borghese saw the best horses and riders in the world on the field twice: in May for the traditional appointment with the spring CSIO and in October with a special edition that was the final of the Samsung FEI Nations Cup circuit. The 86th edition this year will be staged from 24 to 27 May at Villa Borghese and will also see the participation of five Italians , who will represent the country in the race called Nations Cup. Bruno Chimirri, Giulia Martinengo Marquet, Paolo Paini, Luca Marziani and Emanuele Gaudiano, are the five knights … good luck to all of them!
