Sardinia has a special relationship with its horses. It is a land of riders of particular dexterity and renowned skill. There are many events that see them as protagonists, throughout the island, during the year. One of the most important, which takes place during the Carnival period is the Sartiglia of Oristano. Every year, on Carnival Sunday and Tuesday, the most illustrious and talented riders compete in the race for the star. Armed with swords, they run madly on the back of their horses, trying to skewer a star and thus bring home the prestige that gives victory.

A tradition that has lasted, without interruption, for 500 years now, reaching up to the present day, intact and steeped in history and folklore. It reminds a little of the medieval jousting , which were set up in the Middle Ages, in which the participants showed their strength and dexterity to the inhabitants, who flocked to assist from all over the country. And still today its magic and tradition attracts a lot of public, who watch the event with emotion. An event that does not end in the race, but which is made up of small, suggestive and exciting rites. Like the dressing of Su Componidori , the Capocorsa , which marks the beginning of the party. He is dressed in traditional clothes , following ancient rituals that have a mystical flavor. He wears an androgynous mask , the pose of which is accompanied by a suggestive trumpet blast and the subsequent drum roll. Su Componidori opens the race to the star. Then all the other riders, personally chosen by the Leader, will succeed each other in an exciting challenge to the last star. After the race, which ends with the blessing of the public by the Capocorsa, the event continues with the race of the Pariglie .

Perhaps the most spectacular moment of the day. The riders run at a gallop, performing breathtaking stunts , demonstrating all their courage and skill. The party can be said to be over only after the undressing of Su Componidori , always accompanied by the suggestive roll of drums. The Leader becomes a rider only after his mask is removed. When he takes off the clothes of the master of ceremony of the party, he is finally ready to welcome the applause and congratulations of the other riders, who accompanied him during the event.
