It sounds incredible, but in Spain, and more precisely in the province of Huelva, in Andalusia there is a living film set with a western theme. If you’ve always believed that westerns were shot in Arizona, you’ve always been wrong: the sets were located in Spain. The town of El Rocio , created to shoot films such as “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” and “A fistful of dollars”, today attracts many tourists thanks to its true far west atmosphere! The impression when you arrive at El Rocio is remarkable, surprising and surreal: a sleepy town, whose the only asphalt road curves at one point and surrounds the city like a sort of ring road, the road that enters the town is covered with sand . This isn’t a reconstructed movie set, it’s a real country, with sandy streets, which looks like a movie set, but it is not.
People move indifferently with cars, wagons and horses, with which they even go to the bar, which have high counters to drink a glass without getting off the horse !!! The architecture of the town is also reminiscent of the most classic western films: clear facades and the typical missionary church in the center of the square. El Rocio is also very famous for its Romeria. A festival halfway between the religious and the pagan, it is a pilgrimage and a tribute to the Virgin called Paloma Blanca who is carried in procession. Then there is a festival dedicated to songs, dance and food that continues from Friday to Monday. We can conclude by saying that it is precisely here that the true atmosphere of Andalusia is enclosed: the pride and faith of the gypsies that explodes in an artifice of colors, guitars, polished horses with colored vestments and women in bright clothes.
