Abruzzo: the land of the Samnites
Few people know that these territories, before the Roman Empire, were inhabited by the Italic people: the Samnites, the Marsi, the Peligni, the Piceni…. the valiant twelve people of the central Apennines who at the time built their dream of freedom against Roman hegemony. We will ride through these lands steeped in history and ancient bloodshed in numerous battles. We will be based in Alfedena, an ancient Samnite center, where we will be able to admire the remains of the medieval castle of Prince Caracciolo of Cellammare, the walls, and the Norman tower with an octagonal plan dating back to the 10th century.

Arrival in the afternoon, transfer from the train station of Isernia to the equestrian center (on request at h. 19.45). Welcome drink, dinner with the guides and overnight stay.
Free morning. Before lunch meeting with the guides to illustrate the route and brief demonstration of how to saddle the American saddle. After lunch, riders will saddle up for a three-hour walk to get to know their horses. Dinner and overnight stay.
Breakfast and departure around ten o'clock. After a dense forest we cross many fields, where we can gallop. The picnic is in an idyllic place with a beautiful view of the village of Vastogirardi. We continue the route that takes us through a forest of beech trees. At the end there is the "Valle Fredda". Here we do a long gallop. In the evening we serve a delicious dinner prepared by our host.
Today we descend towards the village of Carovilli. Here we tie up the horses and have an aperitif in the square enjoying the atmosphere of the village. We then continue on to Castiglione, a hamlet of Carovilli nearby. At the top of the hill is the ruin of the old church with its bell tower and bell still working, where we stop for a picnic. From here you can see the landscape of the valley around. After lunch we return to the farm and the rest of the afternoon is free. You can relax in a hammock in our Bistrot with a book, or lounge by the fireplace. If time permits you can go to the swimming pool nearby or visit the Castle of Pescolanciano. Dinner and overnight stay on the farm.
We cross the forest and descend to the stream. After crossing it there is a steep climb. Around noon we arrive on a rise where we can look at the landscape surrounding the town of Agnone, Molise. Here we stop for a picnic. After lunch we descend towards the town of Pietrabbondante. Here, in the archaeological area, there are the well-preserved remains of a theater and two Samnite temples. After visiting the archaeological area we return to the farm for dinner and overnight stay.
After breakfast all in the saddle towards Pescolanciano. Before entering the village, we follow a piece of the Tratturo which in this place has remained intact. From here you can see a beautiful view of the Castle that dominates the village. Just before crossing the village you can gallop through the fields. Lunch is served in a small local restaurant. After lunch we can take advantage of the nearby swimming pool where we can relax a bit. The last kilometers in the saddle take us between heaths and oak woods along the valley of the river Trigno where fci will be the possibility to make long gallops. Towards evening we return to the farm, we dissect for the last time and after we enjoy the farewell dinner.
After breakfast, at 8.50 a.m., transfer (Euro 25 to be paid locally) to the train station of Isernia or departure on one's own.

HORSES: Quarter Horse, reliable and accustomed to the proposed routes.
PACE: 4/6 H PER DAY IN THE SADDLE. Experience in handling the horse outdoors and familiarity with 3 gaits is required.

MAXIMUM WEIGHT: 80 KG
TYPE: itinerant trekking with an overnight stay in a hotel/farm.
ACCOMMODATION: The overnight stays will be at the country house adjacent to the stables. The farmhouse-the only inhabited house in this small reserve- was built in 1885, and is located 950 meters away from it. The facade overlooks a large oak forest; the rear offers a panoramic view of the mountains and a beautiful valley. Completely renovated in 2003 it offers guests a family atmosphere, lounge with fireplace, a piano, and a small library. There are three guest rooms (two doubles and one up to six people). The bathrooms are shared.
Packed lunches along the route and dinners of homemade cuisine based on typical local products (drinks included with meals – drinks outside of meals for a fee).
