In this place, an eruption began in 1957 that lasted a year and completely changed the landscape of this area, adding a new strip of land to the island. We can see the remains of the houses that formed the small fishing village, now hidden under the ashes of the eruption.
The museum of the Volcano dos Capelinhos was built underground, at the foot of the ancient lighthouse.
