Discovering the Eastern Desert 2021
Egypt and the Red Sea can turn into a much more varied beach and snorkeling experience. Here we offer you the opportunity to explore on horseback the desert that surrounds the coast of the most famous tourist resorts. The desert surrounding Hurghada is called the Eastern Desert and is the part of the Sahara Desert that lies east of the Nile River, between the river and the Red Sea. It stretches from Egypt in the north to Eritrea in the south, and also includes parts of Sudan and Ethiopia. The Eastern Desert is also known as the Red Sea Hills, the Arabian Desert and the Arabian Mountain Ranges because it is bordered by the Red Sea to the east and because it was originally inhabited by Arabs in pre-Islamic Egypt. The eastern desert is relatively mountainous. The hills reach an altitude of over 1,900 m. The Red Sea Hills are an arid area, receiving less than 200mm of rain annually with high variability. The hills of the Red Sea are a source of porphyry, which was mined as early as the fourth millennium BC. and are still inhabited today by the Beja people, who practice pastoralism and live mainly near the dry riverbeds, wādī, which flow seasonally into the sea and into the Nile, where vegetation is limited. The eastern desert was an important mineral resource for the ancient Egyptians. Limestone, sandstone, granite, amethyst, copper, and gold were among the stones and metals mined from the desert, and the remains of thousands of quarries, camps and roads are scattered across the region’s mountains and wadis.
