Malta, Honey Island 2021
Malta is a small island, very small indeed. With its 14.5 km wide and 27 long, it is one of the smallest inhabited islands in Europe. Nevertheless, Malta and its archipelago, in the center of the Mediterranean Sea, have a very interesting history and many curiosities related to millenary culture and traditions. First of all, its name derives from the Greek “melite” (sweet), it was so called by the Greeks for the large quantity of native bees and their abundant production of honey, still produced in Gozo today. It has many curious aspects, we give you a taste: it is much loved by Hollywood, many of the most famous film producers have filmed here, such as “Game of Thrones” and “Gladiator” for example; you drive on the left due to the past British domination; the church of Mosta, with its dome among the largest in the world, is miraculously intact. A bomb dropped during World War II remained incredibly unexploded; it is a bilingual state and divorce was legalized only in 2011 !! It is a nation famous for its historical sites linked to the various rulers of the island, from the Romans, the Moors, the Knights of St John, the French and the English. Here there are numerous fortresses, megalithic temples and the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum, an underground complex of halls and mortuaries that dates back to around 4000 BC. In short, an archipelago to be discovered and why not on horseback …
