South Africa & Lesotho: discovering the Drakensberg 2021

An adventure on horseback between Lesotho and South Africa is just waiting for  you. Starting from an enchanting farm in Underberg, South Africa, we will discover the Drakensberg area, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. The largest mountain range in South Africa, literally translated “the Dragon Mountains”, comprise the highest peaks in the ‘area, which reach 3,482 meters in Thabana Ntlenyana, Lesotho. From the name we already understand that it is a magical place, full of legends and mysticism. You won’t be surprised to know that LRR Tolkien drew inspiration from these mountains to describe the misty mountains of “Middle-earth” in his mythical “The Lord of the Rings”. We will cross the border between South Africa and Lesotho on horseback, with passport in hand, and enter the beautiful Sehlabathebe National Park.
Little visited but wonderful, registered in 2013 among the UNESCO World Heritage sites, it extends over a remote, rugged and suggestive territory. Its gently rolling grasslands, expanses of wild flowers and silence help create a sense of complete isolation. Populated only by numerous species of birds, some antelope, roe deer and a few villages of local tribes. On horseback ,it will be possible to explore it passing from the impervious Sani Top pass. Get ready to cope with abrupt climate change and violent summer rains.
If the Garden of Eden has ever existed it had to be just like that : an uncontaminated place with infinite spaces that will take your breath away
