The Balkan Mountains 2021
Get to know Bulgaria on horseback, you can discover the easternmost culture of our Europe, among fascinating natural beauties! We propose you this itinerary: a combination of majestic valleys, rivers, dense forests and imposing rocky peaks. With our trekking in the Balkan mountains, also known as Stara Planina, you will lose yourself in the ancient culture, dictated by the rhythms of nature and the seasons, to meet simple and authentic people. We will travel for the most part the Teteven mountains, located in the Central Balkan National Park, where we will find the wonderful reserves of Boatin and Tsarichina, and the famous caves of “Morovitsa” and “Benkovskata” … and then again the Glozhene Monastery and the Fortress Thracian which dates back to Roman times. This is a complete itinerary, a journey between nature and culture that will leave you absolutely satisfied and eager to return to this land.

Arrival at Sofia airport, and transfer to the guest house in the city center. Free meals and overnight stay.
After having breakfast, transfer by car for about an hour and a half to the village of Golyam Izvor in the Teteven mountains, where our horses are waiting for us. Free lunch and half day in the saddle to explore the surroundings. Overnight in Rossi guest house (or similar).
Breakfast and departure with the horses to reach a beautiful viewpoint on the Stara Planina and the town of Teteven surrounded by rocky peaks. Then we will reach the Glozhene Monastery, built in an inaccessible point on a high rock formation; from here we will have an incredible view of the Danube valley. Dinner and overnight in Hotel Perfect (or similar).
The day will start with old tracks, through the village of Brusen. We will then continue south-east towards the village of Lopian, where we will arrive for the early afternoon. Lunch, time available for relaxation, dinner and overnight stay in Momina Polyana Hut guest house (or similar). On request (for a fee) it is possible to go to the Monastery of Etropole and the nearby waterfalls (about 30 min.).
We will pass through lush forests again until we reach the town of Cherni Vit. In the afternoon we will let the horses rest and by transportation we will go to visit the Saeva Dupka caves, famous for their incredible rock formations. Dinner and overnight at Benkovski Hut guest house (or similar) in Cherni Vit.
Today we will leave our horses in Cherni Vit and we will go to the Boatin reserve, part of the Central Balkan National Park, which protects the entire Stara Planina area. Afternoon dedicated to the visit of Teteven. Free dinner and overnight stay in Hotel Cherni Vit (or similar). On request (for a fee) it is possible to visit the Troyan Museum which is located about 80 Km.
After having breakfast, short transfer to go to retrieve the horses in Cherni Vit. Last day in the saddle still characterized by beautiful scenery from the top of the mountains. In the afternoon we will say goodbye to the horses and transfer to Sofia. Free dinner and an overnight stay in hotel.
Breakfast and transfer to Sofia International Airport in time for your flight to Italy.

HORSES : Bulgarian Horses, Karakachan. They are horses with a stature of 1.50 at the withers, bred locally for centuries, they are perfect for mountainous terrain. Courageous and tireless they are used to their pack, so there will be no problem staying in tight groups. GAIT: 4 to 6 hours per day on the saddle. We proceed to the three gaits, ideal valleys for long gallops. Skill in handling the horse in open spaces is required. Sometimes it may be necessary to lead the horse by hand in rough places. MINIMUM AGE : 12 years
