Wetland Adventure 2021
Uruguay is a hidden gem: gauchos culture and pristine beaches ,this country is the perfect destination for those who love unspoiled nature! Set off to discover the province of Rocha on the saddle of tireless Creole horses, a territory protected by Unesco, due to its incredible variety of landscapes, from beaches to marshes, from rolling hills to hidden lagoons. And at the end of the day to crown the pleasure of what we have seen, there will be the delicious local food and wine waiting for us.

Arrival at Carrasco International Airport (MVD) (expect an arrival in the morning) and transfer of about 3 hours to Barra Grande. We will immediately set off on horseback in the East Wetlands biosphere nature reserve protected by UNESCO since 1976 along the shoreline of the Castillos lagoon. After a delightful asado, our guide will guide us through the wetlands proceeding with gallops in the vast grounds surrounding the estancia. There will be numerous explanations on the many species that inhabit these areas: mammals, amphibians, fish and birds. In the late afternoon, arrival at the historic Estancia of Guardia del Monte for dinner and overnight.
After having breakfast, a day dedicated to discovering the estancia lands, where we will see the gauchos work with their horses. After having lunch, we will move away through swamps, grasslands and forests that are absolutely unique from a botanical point of view. Arrive for the night in Los Chajà Ecolodge. Dinner and overnight.
Wake up early to leave for the Atlantic coast. We will cross pine forests until we reach the hidden Briosso lagoon, a very characteristic part of this protected biosphere area. We will have the opportunity to enjoy long gallops on the beach and to enter the sand dunes. Lunch "sea view" and in the afternoon we will go to Cerro Buena Vista, the best viewpoint of the whole coast. Return to Los Chajà Ecolodge for dinner and overnight.
From the village we will leave by fording a small estuary (if the tides allow it) and we will explore a beautiful area of sand dunes up to Cabo Polonio, a small fishing outpost. Lunch in a local restaurant based on fish and in the afternoon return to Los Chajà Ecolodge.
Wake up at dawn with a quick snack and on the saddle to admire the dawn lights that illuminate the ocean. Mid-morning break for a rich breakfast. We will continue the day riding along the coast without crossing a soul, until we arrive at the village of Punta del Diablo in Posada Nativos for a tasty dinner and overnight stay.
After having breakfast ,we will set off towards Santa Teresa Park, a forest administered by the army, a sort of large botanical garden where there are many endemic species. Picnic lunch in the shade of century-old trees, continuation to the Fortress of Santa Teresa, a Hispanic-Portuguese construction. In the afternoon, arrival in the town of La Coronilla, with a visit to the islands of Cerro Verde, part of the National Park, home to many sea turtles. Overnight at Hotel Parque Oceanico, equipped with swimming pools and jacuzzi.
If you want to experience the thrill of being a gaucho, this is your morning! We will very soon start working with livestock in the company of real gauchos who will make you live a unique and absolutely authentic experience. After having lunch, transfer to Montevideo for your return to Italy (plan a flight in the evening).

EQUIPMENT: SOUTH AMERICAN WORKING SADDLE, very comfortable padded with sheepskin
HORSES: URUGUAYAN CREOLE, also bred in Argentina and southern Brazil. These horses were brought by the Spaniards in the seventeenth century, with a good character and excellent resistance and adaptability to the terrain.
GAIT: 4 to 6 hours per day in the saddle. We proceed to the three gaits. Skill in handling the horse in open spaces is required.
MAXIMUM WEIGHT : 90 Kg (supplement available for extra horse up to 100 kg)
TYPE : itinerant trekking with overnight stay in estancias / lodge
ACCOMMODATION: All the accommodations proposed in this itinerary have been selected among the charming structures, both by the sea and in the countryside. All with private bathroom, clean and comfortable and a good standard of services.
All meals will be prepared with fresh products and offering traditional cuisine.
