Abruzzo: The National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio & Molise 2021
The national park of Abruzzo, Lazio, and Molise is one of the oldest national parks in Italy. Established in 1923 to safeguard its exceptional natural characteristics and save some wild animals from extinction, it covers 50,000 hectares in the heart of the central Apennines, between Abruzzo, Lazio, and Molise, and includes 25 municipalities. The landscape is characterized by mountain ranges, streams, and rivers, including the Sangro: an ideal place to spend pleasant days in contact with nature and admire pristine landscapes, a very rich flora, and varied fauna. It is here, in fact, between remote valleys and hairless mountains, that some species, such as the Marsican brown bear, the golden eagle, the Apennine wolf, the deer, the otter, and the chamois have found their refuge and their habitat.

Expect arrival in the afternoon, transfer from the Isernia train station to the equestrian center (on request). Welcome drink, dinner with the guides, and overnight stay.
Free morning and meeting before lunch with the guides to illustrate the stages of the trek, assignment of the horses. After lunch, all in the saddle, to reach, after almost 4 hours, San Pietro Avellana. The horses are placed in a paddock and the riders are transported to a farm for dinner and overnight.
After having breakfast we will reach the horses and by h. 10.30 we will be on the saddle along the Celano-Foggia Tratturo crossing the village of San Pietro Avellana. We will continue to follow the Tratturo as far as the Sangro river and then go up again through a plank of wood along the Abruzzo side. Stop for a picnic lunch on a panoramic hill and then continue uphill until you reach Roccaraso. We cross the plateau and stop at the equestrian center in Rivisondoli. The riders with the means will reach the nearby hotel for dinner and overnight.
We will leave Roccaraso behind to reach the Piano delle Cinque Miglia, where you can take a nice gallop! Then we enter the suggestive canyon of the Montagna Spaccata, up the Pratello mountains, and on foot, we descend along a path inside a plank of wood to arrive at "Agriturismo Jovana" where we will stop for lunch. We will then continue along a downhill dirt road until we reach Scanno, where both we and our mare will be guests of the equestrian center for dinner and overnight stay. For those who are not too tired, after dinner, we recommend a walk through the streets of this charming medieval village.
A busy day awaits us today: let's leave civilization and go up to the mountains of the Abruzzo National Park; we will be surrounded by nature. After a long climb, we stop to enjoy the panorama with its snow-capped peaks almost all year round. We face a steep descent driving the horse by hand and then remount to enter a wood. We climb up to the Monte Marsicano Pass at an altitude of 1,900 meters, where we will stop for a picnic lunch and a little rest. In the afternoon we continue through the forest and arrive in Pescasseroli. Here we arrange the horses in a paddock and move to the village for dinner and overnight.
Relaxing morning with time available for a walking tour of the village of Pescasseroli, the heart of the National Park: an old village with its botanical garden and its central square. After lunch, we return to the horses and we all ride the trails up to the Macchiarvana valley where we can speed up the pace. We go back down into the forest until we stop at the small town of Opi for dinner and overnight.
After having breakfast we leave the village and cross the Val Fondillo surrounded by a beautiful panorama of hills and mountains. From here we have to follow an exciting path along the river bank for about 4 kilometers until we reach the Camosciara where we will stop for a picnic lunch. . After crossing the valley, go up the pass up to Civitella Alfedena from which you can see the lake on the left and the village of Barrea on the left.
